General Information

A non-refundable application processing fee of $60.

·  Cashier’s check or money order payable to “North Dakota Attorney General.” No personal checks, cash or credit cards.  Write your name on the cashier’s check/money order; AND

A photocopy of your current driver’s license; AND Two color passport photos.

·       In our area: McKenzie County Farmer office

·       You may not wear headgear, uniforms, sunglasses or prescription eyeglasses in the photos. Write your name on the back of each photo. 

You must include TWO fingerprint cards.

·       Fingerprints cards are not required for RENEWAL of same class license. 

·       I do fingerprints the day of test $15 fee or you may reach out to a law enforcement office.

Active Duty Military, Out-of-State Residents or US citizens born outside the US

·       Military – If you are not a ND resident, attach a copy of your PCS orders to ND. Active duty military personnel are not required to have a concealed carry permit from their home state.

·       Out of State Resident – A copy of a valid concealed carry license from your home state of residence. (You are a resident of whichever state issued your driver’s license.) If your state does not have reciprocity with ND, you are not eligible for a ND license.

 

·     You must be a legal resident of the US. If you were born outside the United States or its territories, attach a copy of your US-issued Born Abroad birth certificate OR the Alien Registration/INS Registration documentation OR a Naturalization certificate OR a valid US Passport

ND CWL Class 1 or 2? – License differences

Class 1 and 2 are the same in ND

Class 2 requires a written test over ND Law- 1 hour to complete. Able to renew online. Age 18+

Class 1 requires 5 hour presentation over ND Law and written test, shooting proficiency test. Age 21+
Class 1 Recognized by more states … see map for the reciprocity requirements.
Class 1 Renewals compete the entire testing process every 5 years.

Instructor Training Course

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

• A handgun and a holster that attaches to the belt. FOR SAFETY REASONS, NO

ANKLE HOLSTER, CROSS-DRAW HOLSTER OR SHOULDER HOLSTER WILL BE ALLOWED

ON THE RANGE.

• 250 rounds of ammunition

• Two loading devise, either magazines or speed loaders, depending on the

weapon being used. (A revolver may be loaded by hand but speed loaders will

assist in making the time limits for the shooting course.)

• Hearing AND eye protection

COURSE OF FIRE

The target will consist of an 8½ by 11 inch colored piece of paper. 1 point will be awarded for

any shot that either complete or partially penetrates the colored paper. (White paper can only

be used during practice; anything shot with colored paper is counted as the test, no

exceptions.)

Pistol magazines will be loaded with 6 rounds of ammunition. Revolvers will be loaded with 5, 6,

7, 8 or 9 rounds depending on the weapon design.

STAGE 1: 7 – YARD LINE

On the firing command, shooters will draw the handgun from the secured holster and fire 1

magazine or 1 fully loaded cylinder strong hand supported, reload and then fire 1 magazine or 1

fully loaded cylinder strong hand only. All rounds will be fired from a standing position. The time

limit for this stage will be 45 seconds for a 5 shot revolver; 55 seconds for a pistol or 6 shot

revolver; 60 seconds for a 7 shot revolver; or 65 seconds for an 8 or 9 shot revolver.

STAGE 2: 15 – YARD LINE

On the firing command, shooters will draw the handgun from the secured holster and fire 1

magazine or 1 fully loaded cylinder from a standing position, reload and then fire 1 magazine or

1 fully loaded cylinder from a kneeling position. The time limit for this stage will be 50 seconds for

a 5 shot revolver; 60 seconds for a pistol or 6 shot revolver; 65 seconds for a 7 shot revolver; or 70

seconds for an 8 or 9 shot revolver.

THE MINIMUM PASSING SCORE IS 70% OF THE TOTAL ROUNDS FIRED.

5 shot revolver – 14 points

Pistol or 6 shot revolver – 17 points

7 shot revolver – 20 points

8 shot revolver – 23 points

9 shot revolver – 26 points

YOU GET A MAX OF 3 TIMES TO GO THROUGH THE SHOOTING PORTION

An applicant with a disability that may require reasonable accommodation should

supporting paperwork cannot be considered. If an applicant is unable to successfully complete the test
